GENERALLY speaking, drawing is understood by most to be a beginners media. A starting point that one passes on their way to painting, or sculpting, or some other media of choice. A media one uses to sketch out ideas for later more important paintings or sculptural pieces.
Art educators find it to be an excellent media for the budding young art student to explore the use of line and form, shape and perspective. Charcoal, colored pencil, pastel, ink, all extend the lesson and further the exploration.
I teach my beginning high school drawing students technical skills and we spend a lot of time looking for value and form in the three dimensional world. BUT, I encourage their creativity with the media just as much. The quest to find a personal artistic voice, a personal vision must be clearly imprinted.
The act of drawing - pure and simple - is near and dear to my own heart.
I have featured the following artists from DA that I find combine the distinctive qualities that make for exquisite drawings.
(1) Masterful use of technique
(2) Creativity / Originality
(3) Personal vision
(4) An artistic style all their own
Enjoy!

One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious. - Carl Jung
I am a draughtsman by trade and have just joined a group of artists... who find perspective drawing really hard to grasp.
I was astonished at this difficulty. This is not a young group of people and they can all paint extremely well. Something was really a miss when they were taught art.
